Philosophy of the Fall Conference
Leadership development conferences are held to help students and advisors network, understand common strengths, develop unity within your region, Arizona and national SkillsUSA and to support the mission of SkillsUSA--Arizona.

Benefits include:
▪ Student improvement of employability skills
▪ Leadership opportunities within each region
▪ Networking with other students and teachers

Conference Objectives
1. Provide leadership development workshops for students.
2. Student to student and teacher to teacher networking.
3. Exchange information between the state office and advisors
4. Involve local business/industry as presenters
5. Elect the Regional Officer Team for the current school-year

Running For Regional Office
Preparing a student to run for a Regional Office is an important part of the student's experience. It's highly recommended that you consider the following:

1. Review the Regional Officer Application with your student.
Regional Officer Application (Word)

2. Help your student understand the time commitment. On the last page of the application there are a few required conferences. If your student is elected he/she will need to also consider that the Regional Officer Team will set meeting dates/times for regional meetings.

3. Prepare a campaign platform. Ask questions like, "Why do you want to run for office?" "What are your goals as an officer?" "What level of commitment to you bring to SkillsUSA?"

4. Your candidate does NOT need to have a Campaign Manager. But, the support might be great.

5. Practice! Practice! Practice! Every candidate gives a couple of speeches and needs to be prepared to be confident at a podium with a microphone and an audience of students and teachers.

Voting Delegates
Every SkillsUSA section (program) is entitled to voting delegates. The delegates will listen to each candidate's campaign speeches and vote to select the regional officer team. Delegates will only be electing regional officers for their own region.

All sections (programs) with previous school-year membership are entitled to delegates based on the following chart:
Up to 25 members = 2 voting delegates
26-35 members = 3 voting delegates
26-45 members = 4 voting delegates
46-55 members = 5 voting delegates
56-65 members = 6 voting delegates and so on.

Participation Requirement
SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry, working together, to ensure America has a skilled workforce. We help each student excel.

Teachers and students alike are often more excited about attending conferences that involve competitions. These types of functions are important, but they are only one element of a comprehensive career and technical student organization. To this end, the Board of Directors has issued the following statement:

ALL MEMBERS ARE ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IN A STATE-WIDE LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE. The SkillsUSA--Arizona  Board of Directors had directed the state office that eligibility for a section (club) to send contestants to the SkillsUSA--Arizona Championships, in any Level 3 competition, will be based on the section (club) participating at the Regional Fall Leadership Conference or Leadership Training Camp (rev. Nov. 2006)

  Frequently Asked Questions

Why isn't the President elected at the Regional Fall Conference?
During the 2001-02 school year, the student members voted to change the election process so that the newly elected Executive Council could attend the national conference (during June of each summer) and receive extensive leadership training during the summer months. Since each Regional President is a member of the Executive Council, they are now elected at the annual SkillsUSA--Arizona Championships, along with the other officers listed above (right). The purpose is to have a well trained group of officers who can represent the members at regional conferences, business functions and even civic events.

Can we leave for lunch?
Yes, lunch is on your own. Local restaurant map is here (.jpg).

What are regional officer responsibilities?
Officer responsibilities do vary depending on the office. However, the most important officer duties include teamwork, integrity, sincerity and attendance at all regional meetings.

Do regional officers need campaign managers?
No, campaign managers are optional.

What do I wear?
The Regional Fall Leadership conference is a professional conference and all Advisors and students are expected to follow the SkillsUSA--Arizona Conference Attire policy.

Do I have to attend the Regional Fall Conference?
No. However, each Advisor is required to have at least one student attend to be eligible to register students for the SkillsUSA--Arizona Championships. You can send your student or student(s) with another teacher from your school (as long as you follow your district requirements for student travel).

Do I have to be a member?
Advisors and students are strongly encouraged to join SkillsUSA prior to attending the Regional Fall Leadership Conference. The annual membership fee is only $13.00 for students and $19 for advisors. If you join by November 1, you will receive all membership benefits.
